Making The Rounds - Ken Brown

Getting that glow

I have a new role at The Common Bond Foundation. I am selling sponsorships of the wonderful shows on KSVY 91.3 and SVTV Cable Comcast Channel 27. I will also get back into producing fundraisers for them. It’s imperative that Sonoma Valley continues to have a local voice on the air and I am dedicated to keeping that a reality. Folks can reach me at 938.8623 and ken@bearflagsocialclub.com. Do it today!

Vintage Festival 2013 is coming up fast on September 27-29. Here’s a message from Dean Zellars, with the Native Sons of the Golden West talking about the Vintage Festival Parade on Saturday night September 28: “Get Your Glow On Parade! Looking for quality entries that want to light it up!’ For parade applications and more information, Google Valley Of the Moon Vintage Festival and call 996.2109. Make sure you check out the Blessing of the Grapes on Saturday September 28 at 10 a.m. in front of the Sonoma Mission. I wouldn’t miss it, for sure.

It was a very enthusiastic crowd of over 100 SDC supporters, parents, staff and relatives of SDC residents that attended the rally in the Plaza on Saturday past. There was an amazing response from pedestrians waving and motorists honking as we marched. I want to thank Councilmembers Laurie Gallian and David Cook for being there as well. Its crucial SDC remains. Civilizations are remembered for how they provide services to those who cannot provide for themselves.

I celebrated Freedom Day at the Red Grape just off the Plaza at 529 First St. W. Carol and Sam Morphy, the owners of the Red Grape, who do all they can to support our community gave out complementary All American Pizza’s to current servicemen and former servicemen like me. It was delicious pizza and it made me feel good to be recognized for my service to the U.S.A. Thank you.

This past weekend I continued to celebrate the Jewish High Holy Days. I want to thank Congregation Shir Shalom for being so welcoming to me during this special time in a Jew’s life. I had an enlightening spiritual experience. The entire congregation was so very nice and the break the fast meal was glorious. I’ll be back.

Mexican Independence Day this past Sunday in Sonoma Plaza (just think how important Sonoma Plaza is to our life here) produced by Nuestra Voz pulled together the significant cultures that live and work here in Sonoma Valley. Music, amazing dancers in the most vibrant dress, performing horses, food and community information was just awesome. Please check out Nuestra Voz and learn about their services offered at Nuestravozsonoma.org.

There’s a warm and fuzzy story developing right here in the Valley that I hope you’ll consider.  Aidan O’Reilly is a kid who grew up in Sonoma and took an active interest in acting from an early age.  Though almost totally blind he built a hearty reputation as an actor and went on to study with the Royal Shakespeare Co. in London. Fast forward to his forming the Sonoma Valley Shakespeare Company.  I’m a life-long Shakespeare fan, and I can say that Aidan’s productions are the best I’ve ever seen.  Anyway, he came down with a bout of cancer recently and was unable to present any productions this season, so his friends here in the community have organized to present a fundraising production of “A Christmas Carol” this December at the Community Center.  We have a whole compliment of players, director (me), costumer (Linda Rawls), choreographer, etc, everyone donating their services.   What we need, especially right now is to get the word out for some more actors, especially children, to audition. Contact Jim Kent at 2801078, and jamesrkent@earthlink.net.

My quote of the week resonates throughout my being: “When the power of love overcomes the love of power, the world will know peace.”
