Making The Rounds - Ken Brown

Welcome to Market season

Tuesday night was the first Farmer’s Market of the season. It was highly anticipated, and exceeded all expectations. A wonderful vista has opened in Sonoma Valley on Tuesday nights. Join your community to shop for organic local produce, lovely hand made crafts, multiple information booths and my City of Sonoma Mayor office hours. The market begins at 5:30 p.m. and the music kicks off at 6 p.m. Next week, May 14, it’s Showcase The Band. Come visit me at my office hours from 5:30-7:30 p.m. on the West Driveway of the Sonoma Plaza Horseshoe.

This Sunday past I was a Tamale Cook Off judge for Sonoma Valley Schools on Cinco de Mayo. I tasted over 21 samples of tamales and I will now take a well-deserved tamale break. I had the honor of sitting between two of the Grand Ladies of Sonoma Valley, Kathleen Hill and Ligia Booker. My main contact was Lucie Szakallas, a stellar organizer and mom from Sonoma Charter School. A great crowd of over 900 folks gathered at Cornerstone Sonoma to participate in a true family event. The dancers of Ballet Folklorico Quetzalan brought tears to my eyes. They celebrated the rich culture, music, costumes and dance of Mexico with dancers from our elementary and middle schools, the high school and adults. Here is the list of winners. People’s Choice: Picazo Café. Most Creative: Chef Eric Magnani. Traditional:  Big 3 at The Fairmont. Amateur First Place:  – Regina Baker.  Amateur Second Place:  A tie between the team of Bob Aguirre and Sam Rivera, and Marbella Mondragon. I will be back next year for sure.

Congratulations to Troy and Lauren Taylor for being honored for operating the best Baskin-Robbins store in America. There are over 2,000 Baskin-Robbins shops in the U.S. They have been in business in Sonoma for over 25 years and share the credit with their staff members Robin Ward and Ashley Weikert. Way to go Sonoma!

Save the date of Sunday May 19 or the Sonoma Classical Music Society’s showcase of the Ives String Quartet at Jacuzzi Family Vineyards Winery. You can go to for tickets and more information. Please check Wally Brightman’s Sonoma Sunrise show from 7 to 8 a.m. each weekday on KSVY 91.3 FM.

From Sonoman Howard Egger- Bovet: “Picture yourself in your seat, in the dark, and the curtain rises. The magic of lighting creates the morning as a salutation is sung and the hotel, that gives so much, awakens. The breeze, waves. The sun. It begins in the rooms, at breakfast, on the grounds, in the lobby and on the beach. It begins between two families, and the hotel staff. Together. Torn.  In love and in pain. In belief and betrayal. In reality and dreaming. Dreams of the world. Dreams of the heart.  Wanting to belong. This awaits the audience of ‘Ohana.’  The journey to bring “Ohana” to the stage has begun, with your help. Please go to our website:, and the linked Kickstarter page, and give what you can to reach our Kickstarter Campaign goal: $5,000 by May 30. Or Spread the word! Or both.” Lets support Howard in this adventure.

From my Relay For Life friends, “Long story short, we are suddenly in need of a new Logistics Chair with just three months to go! We have a subcommittee to help, but we need a leader. The person just needs to be willing to help, and work hard. They can email Jo at or Jackie Lyons at or call 935-5238. We would be eternally grateful for your help.” The Relay For Life is an amazing event in Sonoma so if you have logistic talent you can put it use for the greater good.
